Mission Statement

We, the Digital Museum of Japanese Sports, curated this museum dedicated to Japanese sports based on the following philosophy: we cannot tell the story of Japanese sports without
them. We chose people who greatly influenced Japanese sports, including sports native to Japan and sports not native to Japan where Japanese people have made historic strides. Not
only are great athletes included, but the philosophers and organizers who significantly altered the institution of Japanese sports, and the events that show how Japanese culture
specifically has impacted these sports. We created main sections on sumo because of its history as the oldest native Japanese sport, kendo because of its rich military history in Japan
with the sword being a national symbol, judo because it was the first native Japanese sport popularly practiced worldwide, and baseball because it is the most popular sport in Japan by
far. We have also created a section highlighting notable Japanese athletes in non-native sports like figure skating and basketball. We are proud to be the first and only museum in the
world - digital or physical - dedicated to Japanese sports.
